Church Building Redevelopment Appeal

From the original church opened by C H Spurgeon in 1871, which was destroyed by a bomb in the Second World War.

To today, when the Tab, as a multi-cultural church, continues to reach out to the East End
Who are we?
We are a vigorous, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural congregation (35 nationalities at the last count). Over 150 people attend our Sunday morning service, and we also have a Russian speaking congregation.

What do we do?
As a Church centred on God’s word, we have preaching, teaching and prayer ministries. A Russian speaking fellowship is part of the Church, and a Korean Baptist Church also uses the building. Bible studies take place in home fellowship groups, small groups for men or women and for specific language groups. We reach out into our community with these ministries and also through:
A parent and toddlers’ group An international students’ group Youth groups English language classes
Some of these activities we are able to share with neighbouring churches.
Where are we?
We are just two miles east of the City, a mile north of Canary Wharf with Stratford and the 2012 Olympics a mile further east. Mile End tube station is only 2 minutes away and we look forward to reaching out further with the extensions to the docklands light railway and the East London line, and possibly crossrail.
Who is my Neighbour?
Over a third of the population in Tower Hamlets is Bangladeshi (of whom half are under 20) and 7% are from African/Caribbean backgrounds.

What we have done
-
In recent years, thanks to a number of grants and the generosity of many, we have been able to refurbish most of the south side of the building. This has enabled us to serve the community by allowing rooms to be used by outside groups, such as Expert Patients Programme, Alzheimers Society and the National Childbirth Trust.
-
We have also revamped our main entrance to make the building more inviting and less like a fortress! This includes the installation of new outer doors, that remain open when the building is in use, and inner glass doors controlled by a keypad entry system. We have also erected a glass canopy over the entrance.
-
Two new seminar rooms have been created by reconfiguring the main toilet areas and we have completely refurbished the gents’ toilet area, installing modern facilities.
What remains to be done
-
Very soon we hope to refurbish the ladies’ toilet area and we are considering whether to re-site the two youth toilets. A number of basement windows need to be replaced.
-
However, the main focus of future redevelopment work is the main auditorium area. This is a huge space with a sloping floor and old-fashioned wooden pews. We would like very much to redecorate this room but, even better, to level the floor to make it into a more usable space. Obviously this will be a very expensive project! The remaining areas in need of attention are the rooms on the first floor – a large hall, a kitchen and a toilet.
